The world was still reeling from the ravages of war and Bahamian soldiers, eighteen hundred of them, including “the Gallant Thirty” who had fought on behalf of the British Empire were returning home to a depressed economy marked by falling sisal prices. Imagine a society marked by “The Upper Upper Ten” (who had an open invitation to Government House) “The Lower Upper Ten” (who were invited to Government House on State occasions) and then there were the others, who would never, ever receive an invitation. This was The Bahamas that bid Emma Fairdora Anna Poitier welcome on 11th June, 1919.
