Hartley Reginald Smith was born August 1, 1933 in the Family Island settlement of Mars Bay, South Andros, Bahamas. While still an infant, he was taken and cared for by one of his older sisters, Edna Carey-Lewis. Under her guidance, he attended the Government All–Age School in Pleasant Bay where Mr. U. B. Toote was principal.

Theodore Roosevelt Sweeting was born at Matthew Town, Inagua, Commonwealth of The Bahamas, to the late Ralph and Mariah Sweeting on 13 May, 1924. He was the fifth of eight children born to this union.

Elva was the seventh of eight children, born to the late Augustus and Lillian Ritchie on December 31st 1922 , in the quaint settlement of Deadman’s Cay Long Island. She was a beautiful brown- skinned child with long black hair, who enjoyed playing with her younger brother Ullin since her sister (Veronica ) was 10 years her senior and her other sister Olga had died in early childhood. Elva attended the Public All-Age School at Buckley’s and remained there until she left Long Island, as was the custom, to seek employment in New Providence.
