Seldom is one so priviledged to be in the company of such a strong, energetic, peaceful, friendly, young man; one who gave so graciously and loved so unconditionally; one who believed in himself and one who was always willing to give others the benefit of a doubt; one who believed in God and one who, nearing the end of his earthly journey placed his complete trust, yea, his very life in His Creator’s hand, such as Philip “Big Mike” Bethel.

Philip Michael Bethel, Jr. was born September 12th, 1972 at Governor’s Harbour Clinic. The sixth and final child born to Philip and Yvonne Bethel of Palmetto Point.

Michael attended pre0school in the basement of the now Assemlies of God in North Palmetto Point.
At age six (6), he and his family relocated to New Providence. Mike attended C.W. Sawyer Primary School in Yellow Elder for two and a half years.

In January 1981, Mike transferred to Queen’s College and remained there for many years. During Junior High, Michael transferred to Melbourne, Florida to attend the Florida Air Academy. Several years later, Mike attended and completed his years of formal education at Pickering College, in Newmarket, Canada.

After college, Michael returned home to Eleuthera to work in the family business. And, as it is, in the case of all of his siblings, Michael worked at Eleuthera SupplyLtd and Eleuthera agencies in various capacities. Michael managed the Insurance, the Propane and Fuel departments. He worked in the Hardware and the Grocery store. He also travelled throughout the Island trading goods. Michael also did accounting for his family’s business, with additional responsibility for overseeing business done with the various governmental departments and licensing agencies, in New Providence, affiliated with the Company.

Michael was very competent and detail oriented. He was versatile and always willing to assist when needed. He had a passion for trading and he enjoyed traveling throughout the Island of Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, and Harbour Island. He especially enjoyed the social aspect of his work, meeting and interacting with his customers.

Additionally, Mike operated his own business for several years, ’Governor’s Harbour Sports Bar’ a restaurant and bar on Queen’s Highway.

Michael enjoyed many hobbies. He thoroughly enjoyed sports and was an avid reader. He kept abreast of current events locally and abroad. He thoroughly enjoyed technology whether it was surfing the web or texting, videography or photography. Michael also enjoyed music and watchinhg musical concerts. He enjoyed dancing and spending time with friends. Michael was also a gamer; whether it was a video game or a board game: backgammon, cards or dominos…he was a proficient player.

Michael received inspiration and spiritual counsel from the People’s Restoration Baptist Church where his father serves as senior Pastor. It was here where his love for God was built and the vehicle in which his faith in God was nourished. He especially looked forward to special occasions where he enjoyed documenting each participant taking pictures and/or video taping.

Michael was a free spirit. He loved life. He was a happy person who was loved by so many people because of the ease with which he displayed genuine affection. Michael possessed a magnetic personality…..he loved people and could get along with anybody.

Like all of us, Michael had his struggles and his shortcomings; he too encountered personal battles, some he won, others he lost, but he never gave up on life and living, he kept fighting, he kept moving forward because he knew that he had an internal assurance that God was his refuge and fortress. Even when he received the report from the doctors that a cancerous tumour had invaded his body,
Michael was able to draw back on the foundation of his faith in Christ and publicly confessed Him as Lord and Master and turned his life over completely to Him. He recognized his human frailty and his inability to continue his life on the path he once traveled. For the scripture says, “for what shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul; or what shall a man gain in exchange for his soul?...”

Thank God, Michael made the right decision, while he was in his sound mind, God be Praised!

Michael was an attentive and loving FATHER. An affectionate SON who hugged and kissed his parents all the time. As a BROTHER, Michael was respected, loving and well loved. As an UNCLE, “uncle Mike” was always smiling and fun to be around! As a FRIEND, Michael was sincere and dependable, ‘ya boy’, ‘big mike’. As a MAN, Michael was strong, brave and bold!

“Many are the plans of men, but God’s purpose must prevail. For us, Michael is certainly Gone Too Soon. We do not understand why this happened or even how this happened and moreover, how quickly this happened. We can only conclude that Our God is in control and He knows what is best for our lives and what He does, may not be comfortable or easy to comprehend but it’s well done!

“Never a burden that He does not carry, never a sorrow that He does not share; whether the days may be sunny or dreary, we find comfort in knowing that JESUS IS ALWAYS THERE!

I could not believe it when Pamela texted us early Tuesday morning to say that Michael had passed. I said this is senseless and sad one week you here the next week you are gone. I was then grateful for the hug I received from him when I was in Governor's Harbour in June of this year. My condolences to the family he was a quiet giant of a man and will truly be missed. All I can say to those of us that are still here "be ye also ready because you know not the day". Love you all and may the all seeing, all knowing God of comfort be with you during this time. RIP Michael.
