Raymond Russell was welcomed into the union of Cedral (deceased) and Sarah Russell on the 16th August, 1943, in the settlement of West End, Grand Bahama. He was the first of six children and attended the West End All Age School, in Grand Bahama.

In the summer of 1964, he met his beautiful bride Helen Gray, and was married on December 19, 1964.  This union lasted for 51 years and produced six children.

Raymond spent over 45 years in the construction business and worked with both small and large companies including Waugh Construction Company, Ervin Knowles Construction Company, Mike Stubbs Enterprises, Eagle Construction Company, Airport Road Company and his very own business, Columbus Isles Builders.  He acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout his working life as the jobs afforded him the opportunity to experience the length and breadth of the Bahamas as he travelled working the many islands and cays supervising road building, construction of runways and docks which included structural building works.  He was also Chief Inspector with the consulting engineers for the San Salvador Airport expansion project in 1996.

Almost 20 years ago he relocated and made the beautiful island of San Salvador home where his spirit of excellence and strong work ethic, combined with his love for people and his desire for helping others, inspired him to invest in the building of his community, creating employment for many over the years.

Raymond would always greet you with a big smile, a kind and generous man with a passion for farming.  Much of the produce which he grew was given to those in his community and some sold in his own local business “Island Distributors”. Among his many passions was spending time with family, travelling and cooking  - you could be sure when Raymond cooked the biggest pot he had in the kitchen everyone  would get the call to come get some!   He enjoyed hard work but also enjoyed life and he will be missed.
