On December 8th, 1930, Iris Elizabeth Levarity was born to proud parents, Adelaide and Benjamin Roy Levarity, in the Settlement of Bailey Town, Bimini. Iris was the fourth child for her parents.  Three months later Iris returned with her mother to the lighthouse station at the Hole-in-the-Wall, Abaco, to be with her father; who was a lighthouse keeper.  Iris received her early education under the mentorship of her father.

The family later relocated to San Salvador. Iris was enrolled at the All-Age School at United Estates, San Salvador.   At the age of eight Iris lost her mother; leaving her and her four siblings with her father.  Because of Mr. Levarity’s job, Iris and her siblings travelled to various islands (Elbow Cay, Sturrup Cay and Castle Island)

Iris’s father would later remarry Melrita Williams.  That union produced two children; Bernard and Adelaide.  The family relocated to Nassau, in 1949, where her younger siblings received their education.  Iris met the love of her life, Arlington Livingston Miller, shortly after her arrival in Nassau.  Shortly afterwards, they became engaged and got married on April 12th, 1950 at the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church.  The ceremony was officiated by Canon Donald Knowles. This union produced four children; Una, Alelia, Earl and Caron.  After they were married, this couple spent 10 years at Watkins, Cay Lobos and Sturrup Cay before settling down in Nassau; where their children would attend School.  Una was enrolled at Western Junior and Prince Williams School; Aleila at Oakes Field and Government High schools, Earl at Western Junior and Prince Williams and Caron at Oakes Field and Prince Williams.

Mrs. Miller worked at the Sonesta Beach Hotel which was later renamed Ambassador Beach Hotel and is now called Super Club Breezes, as Cashier and Supervisor.  She also served as Chief Shop Steward of the Bahamas Hotel and Allied Workers Union.

The family of Arlington and Iris Miller have worshipped at Bethel Baptist Church for more than fifty (50) years. Iris has served in various capacities in the ministry which included: the choir, for over forty (40) years and the Treasurer for the Senior Saints for more than 20 years.  Iris Elizabeth Levarity-Miller has lived a full life; from her contribution to the development of her community, to her devotion to her church and of course her family.

On Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016, the Lord looked down; this beautiful flower in the garden and saw fit to pick her.  So, after sixty-six (66) years of devotion and love to her family, Iris laid down and slept.
