Death came peacefully to George William Wilberforce Gardiner during the early morning hours of January 3rd, 2016.

The eldest son of  George William Wilberforce Gardiner Sr. and Alice Maude Clarke-Gardiner, he was born June 20th, 1928.

He was educated at Western Preparatory School, Western Junior School and Western Senior School. He completed Correspondence Courses in Bookkeeping, Accounting and General Education from the London School of Accounting and completed Overseas Courses in Postal and Public Administration at the Postal Management College in Rugby, England and the University of The West Indies Mona, Jamaica.

He was employed in the Civil Service for his entire career. He started as a Messenger at the Post Office in 1946 and rose through the ranks to Assistant Postmaster. He retired as Deputy Port Controller in 1986. He was a Founding Member and First Treasurer of The Bahamas Public Services Union. For his many years of service to the community, he was invested with The British Empire Medal on 27th June, 1996.

“ Posey” Gardiner was an avid sportsman. He was Treasurer of the Cee Bees Sporting Club and helped to pioneer the development of softball in the country -  introduced the  “ Windmill ” softball pitch .

He was a Founding Member of:

The Bahamas Softball Association.

The Bahamas Baseball Association – 1954  ( Treasurer for many years ).

Bahamas Government Inter Company Softball League – Assisted in drafting the Constitution.

Grand Bahama Recreational Softball League – First Treasurer.

Head Coach Cee Bees Ladies Team – Champion, first Ladies Softball Series.

St. Albans Cricket Team – Opening Bowler.


He loved the Lodge and served as :

Past Grand Master – Most Worshipful Prince of Peace Grand Lodge Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Past Grand Patron – Queen Bathsheba Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of the Adoptive Rite.

Grand Inspector General 33 and Last Degree of Freemasonry.

Past deputy Inspector General – Bahamas Supreme Council Thirty Third and Last Degree Ancient And Accepted Rite of Freemasonry.

Noble – Omar Temple – Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine North and South America. John G. Jones Affiliation.

Chartered Secretary – Doric Lodge No. 2 Independent United Order of Mechanic Western Hemisphere Inc.

We will miss your love for life, your kind words of encouragement, your eternally positive personality and your insistence that we live life for today.

We love you and bid you farewell Uncle George and may you forever rest in peace.
